#10. GodMode On Windows
In Windows, there is a hidden function which allows all system management tools (usually spread through control panel, computer management, administration tools etc) to be conveniently accessed from a single place. It is called as GodMode.GodMode is not a plugin, or a software. To activate a GodMode shortcut, you just need to create a new folder and rename it to a specific file name with a code.
Create a new folder anywhere on your Desktop and rename the folder from 'New Folder' to this exact code:
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
You'll notice while pasting the exact code as above into the folder name, the part 'GodMode.' won't get placed over there and only the code with the curly braces will, cause that part becomes the folder name and the code implements all the functions into the folder.
You can also rename the folder to anything you want!
Just hit enter and your GodMode shortcut will get created. The folder icon will resemble like that of Control Panel.
You can now access all the functions and tools from one place which are originally intended to be available only to Microsoft developers.
For all those who use Windows Vista 64-bit: Don't try this at home. It caused my Windows Explorer to repeatedly crash, rendering my account unusable. If you did this, here is a fix: Log in to another account on safe mode, and delete the registry entry with the same code you entered for God Mode.
#9. Access Windows 7 Hidden Themes
In Windows 7 there are a few official themes which gets unlocked as per your geographical location. It offers you location specific Aero themes based on the language and location you pick during installation.By default when you begin the installation of Windows 7, you choose English as your default language and sometimes you even select the default time and currency format as English (United States).
Well, that's not a matter to worry about as you can change it later after the installation.
So after selecting US, you are presented with location specific themes from the United States with desktop backgrounds such as some scenery, a lighthouse view, orchid garden etc.
So in order to access order hidden regional themes, open Windows Explorer, click the Organize button and select folder and search options from the drop down menu.
This should open up the Folder Options window. Click the View tab. Under the section labeled Advanced settings, look for the value Show hidden files, folders, and drivers and select it.
Next, look for the value Hide protected operating and uncheck it. If prompted with a popup window click Yes, then click the OK button.
After that simply open up your run command by pressing Win+R or go to My Computer and in the address bar, type in the following path:
C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT
MCT is a hidden sub-folder in the Globalization folder. If someone doesn't knows the path and browse the Globalization folder, he/she won't find any such sub-folder named MCT until and unless their hidden files and folders are shown.
That's why you directly go to that location using the address bar or run command.
When you open the MCT folder, you will find additional themes for Canada, Australia, South Africa, and Great Britain.
Go into the folder that you want to activate its theme. You can also go in and grab just the wallpapers.
Open the theme folder inside the selected region folder. Double click on the XX.theme file to apply the theme to the Windows 7 desktop system.
Once a theme is ran and activated, the theme will be remembered and saved into personalization options, so that user can change or select the theme again directly from personalization settings screen.
After you have checked out the new themes, go ahead and change the Globalization settings back for Windows.
Launch Windows Explorer. Click the Organize tab and select Folder and search options from the drop down menu.
Click the view tab and re-select Don't show hidden files, folders, and themes. Also re-select hide protected operating system files. Click the OK button.
That’s all there is to it. You should now have several new country themes available in your Windows 7 themes library. Right-click on your desktop and select personalize. You should now see your new themes listed.

#8. CAPTCHA
CAPTCHA or Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart serves more than just preventing spam.
By entering the words in the box, you are also helping to digitize texts that were written before the computer age. The words that you see are taken directly from old texts that are being scanned and stored in digital format in order to preserve them and make them more accessible to the world.
Since some of the words in these texts are difficult for computers to process, it uses the results of our efforts to help decipher them. That's why the sign says 'stop spam, read books'.
So, it wasn't a waste of your precious time after all.
Each new word is given to a user in conjunction with another word for which the answer is already known. The user is then asked to read both words.
If they solve the one for which the answer is known, the system assumes their answer is correct for the new one.
The system then gives the new image to a number of other people to determine, with higher confidence, whether the original answer was correct.
#7. Google Sold!
Google.com(the
domain name) was sold for $12. Now you may ask what is so interesting
about this. $12 seems like a reasonable price to pay for the domain when
google started out and it was not a household name.
Well what makes it interesting is the date in which the domain was sold on 29 Sept 2015 . Oh yes! That was not a typo. You read it correctly 2015. The worlds most valuable domain was mistakenly sold for mere $12 on 29th due a security glitch to an ex-googler.
It
was bought by Sanmay Ved who worked at google for 5 and 1/2 years. He
found that the domain was listed for sale and went ahead with the
purchase expecting an error.
But the transaction went through and he
became the proud owner of the domain for one minute. By then google had
realized its mistake and sent him an email cancelling the transaction.
As a reward for finding the glitch he was awarded the playful sum of $6006.13( Squint a little and you would see it numerically spells out to GOOGLE!!) .
When he explained that he did not intend to cash the reward and was planning to donate to charity Google doubled the reward to $12000.
#6. Facebook
The most popular social networking site Facebook has some facetiousness to its email or phone and subsequently password section. We are keen on the latter part.
After entering the email or phone, you enter the password. There are two possible inputs which are termed as valid.
You can either input your password as it is or you can just reverse the case of all the letters in your password i.e lower to upper and vice versa. (The numbers and allowed special characters are kept as they are).
For example if your password is LIFEISGOOD, then input lifEIsGoOD and voila, 69 new notifications;10 messages;23 requests blah.
This feature was added designedly. We tend to keep our caps lock key on and struggle logging in, so Mark Zuckerberg and team accounted for the same.
This is not a loophole. If you do not believe, give it a try.
#5. QWERTY Keyboard
The
current format of the keyboard was devised in 1870’s by a gentleman
named Christopher Sholes. Though, it definitely was not the first format
to come up, it didn’t take much time to switch to this one.
Starting
with lexicographic order i.e. A-B-C-D-E-F, after various trials and
errors and taking hundreds of cases, Christopher Sholes gradually
reached the Q-W-E-R-T-Y. It was really well received (evident from the
fact that we still use it).
When the
typewriter was invented, it used a metal bar to hold the character
alphabets and the other end of the bar was attached to a linkage
carrying a carriage with the coated ink.
When a key was struck, it would
emboss its character on the paper placed beneath the carriage. However,
when an operator learned to type at a great speed, a certain flaw
invoked.
When two letters were struck in quick succession, the bars of
the typewriter would entangle and get jammed.
Christopher
Sholes found a way out. He proposed that the letters of frequently used
letter pairs should be in different rows. For example, ‘C-H’, ‘S-T’,
’T-H’, ‘E-H’ and more.
He also formulated that to speed up the typing
process, there has to be a regular alternation between two hands. So
observing thousands of words, he placed the letters in way that most
words would make use of both hands.
He also
observed that almost every word in the dictionary carries a vowel.
According to him, the most frequently used vowel was ‘A’ and the most
frequently used letter (non-vowel) was ‘S’.
So he placed ‘A’ and ‘S’
together and chose to keep less common letters like ‘Q’, ‘W’, ‘Z’, ‘X’,
‘C’ around these. This was complemented by placing fairly common letters
like ‘M’, ‘N’, ‘L’, ‘K’, ‘O’, ‘P’ at right extremes to create a perfect
alternation between both the hands.
All these factors tested with thousands of trials gave us the format that we still use and perhaps would be using till eternity.
#4. Screen Saver Actually Saved!
During the times of early CRT monitors, if the same image was continuously displayed on the screen for a long time it would suffer a phosphor burn-in, which is permanent discolouration of certain areas causing image degradation and ghost images.
Screen savers were designed to mitigate this effect by making sure that the screen is either blanked out or filled with continuously changing images or patterns so this burn-in would not occur.
#3. 3G On Mount Everest
Everest has a permanent 3G connection to the summit.
Ncell, the Nepalese subsidiary of Swedish carrier TeliaSonera installed a high-altitude 3G base station at 5,200 meters. The station provides a signal even at the highest point of 8,848 meters.
Although the introduction of phone communication all the way up to the summit is a great achievement, it must take a bit of the magic out of making it up there. Imagine you are standing on the peak admiring the view and the sounds, only to have it interrupted by a ringtone in your pocket or from one of the other climbers.
#2. Dolphins Don't Drink Water!
The
salinity of sea water, at around 35 parts per 1000, means that the
water is hypertonic relative to the water in their organs, so they would
dehydrate drinking water.
As a result, they only get their water from the food that they eat.
#1. Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs was always seen with a Mercedes without a licence plate in photographs. So how did he do this?
The reason is actually really simple.
Steve
Jobs (or someone close to him) spotted a loophole in the California
vehicle laws. Anyone with a brand new car had a maximum of six months to
affix the issued number plate to the vehicle.
So he made an arrangement with the leasing company; he
would always change cars during the sixth month of the lease,
exchanging one silver Mercedes SL55 AMG for another identical one.
At no time would he ever be in a car as old as six months; and thus
there was no legal requirement to have the number plates fitted.
One
might also assume that the leasing company was happy – they had an
endless supply of luxury cars to on-sell (With a base price of $113,000) with the previous driver being none-other that Steve Jobs.
That would be a win-win-win situation for Steve, the leasing company and for the subsequent buyer.
