Science, the word that changed the phase of human life. It brought the people from forests to cities, from earth to space, from homes to buildings.
The development, modernization, urbanization which made us self sufficient and started the era of machines which can help us do the most peculiar and difficult of tasks, easily. But science and its facts are rapidly bulking.
So here we are counting upon our list of Top 10 Most Fascinating Science Facts You Should Know that are mostly unknown to many people. Now you may buckle up, as we're diving straight to the list.
#10. An Unknown Human Organ
A human organ that no-one knew about has been hiding in plain sight all this time. Called Mesentery, it connects the intestine to the abdomen and is believed to perform important functions for the body ranging from helping the heart to aiding the immune system.
#9. An Unknown Continent
The Earth appears to have a whole new underground continent called Zealandia. The discovery itself isn’t new – some geologists have been arguing for its existence for many years.
However, in 2017 a team of scientists concluded Zealandia fulfills all the requirements to be considered as a drowned continent.
#8. A New State Of Matter
A new state of matter exists (alongside solid, liquid and gaseous states) and it is known as time crystals.
Created in the lab, the outrageously hard-to-grasp time crystals are structures that repeat periodically in time rather than space, potentially defying the laws of physics.
#7. Wrong Dinosaur Family Tree
The dinosaur family tree may have to be redrawn for the first time in 130 years.New evidence revealed the two categories of dinosaurs – the lizard-hipped meat-eaters (like the T. Rex) and plant-loving bird-hipped beasts (like the stegosaurus) – should actually be grouped together, making you question everything you ever learnt about these extinct animals in school.
#6. Different Egg Shapes
Scientists may finally have an answer to why eggs come in different shapes and, apparently, it is all down to the bird’s flying ability. It seems the best fliers are the ones that lay more “pointy” or elliptical shaped eggs while the others are more likely to lay rounded or oval-shaped eggs.
#5. Time Travel Is Possible
It is theoretically possible to travel back and forth in time. Two physicists developed a mathematical model for a time machine based on Einstein’s theory of relativity (which was proven in 2015), that gravitational fields are caused by distortions in the fabric of space and time.
What’s holding us back is that the technology that can physically bend this space-time fabric hasn’t been invented yet.
#4. You Do Look Back In Time
When you look into the night sky, you are looking back in time. The stars we see in the night sky are very far away from us, so far the star light we see has taken a long time to travel across space to reach our eyes.
This means whenever we look out into the night and gaze at stars we are actually experiencing how they looked in the past.
For example, the bright star Vega is relatively close to us at 25 light-years away, so the light we see left the star 25 years ago; while Betelgeuse (pictured) in the constellation of Orion is 640 light-years away, so the light left the star around 1370, during the time of the Hundred Years’ War between England and France.
Other stars we see are further away still, so we are seeing them much deeper in their past.
#3. Living Vs. Non-Living
The only difference between living and non - living thing is chemistry and complexity: Our solar system is not qualified as a living thing, because the system is not complex enough. You, on the other hand, are qualified to be a living being, because of so much complexity and chemistry going on inside you, even though the laws of physics governing them is the same as that of a solar system
#2. Why You Can't Escape A Black Hole
The real reason why can’t you escape a black hole: Contrary to the dumb explanation of black holes, they don’t really suck light or anything for that matter. The reason once inside a black hole, you cannot escape it, is quite simple. As the name suggests, a black hole is hole punched in our space-time. The key word is space-time.
Once you enter a black hole, you are simply no longer in our space-time. We believe, the space-time inside the black hole is so radically altered, that once you enter it, whatever direction you move, you will always end up at the center of the black hole.
Where as when looked from outside, you will be forever frozen at the entrance of the black hole. i.e. an observer far away, would never ever see you enter the black hole (even until the end of the universe).
Freaky, huh?
#1. We Do Not Revolve Around Sun
Well, Technically we do not revolve around the sun but around the center of mass of the solar system
The center of mass of our solar system very close to the Sun itself, but not exactly at the Sun's center.
