World is full of secrets- amazing facts, interesting happenings, mesmerizing truths and unbelievable proofs. Well of all these, one can only know only a handful of such things.
Most of these interestingly true things are not known to many people, and people who know are not generous enough to share it with others.
So here we are counting upon our list of Top 10 Interesting Things That Sound Wrong But Are Actually Correct and that will certainly blow your mind.
These great sounding, unbelievable facts are certainly going to your head so buckle up as we're diving straight to the list.
#10. Coldest Place On Universe
The coldest place in the whole known Universe exists on Earth.
Yes.
It is a temperature at which atom and light itself behave in highly unusual way.
It is the Wolfgang Ketterle’s lab, MIT, Cambridge.
Temperature achieved:
(810 trillionths of a degree F above absolute zero).
It holds the Guinness world record.
To get an idea of this temperature, you must know:
The coldest Temperature in deep outer space is−455∘F.
The coldest Temperature on Moon is−275∘F.
Now imagine the chills Wolfgang Ketterle’s lab can give you.
Ketterle achieved this feat when he was actually trying to create a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC).
These condensates are formed when a cloud of atoms enters the same quantum state and behave homogeneously.
For his earlier achievements and fundamental study on condensates, he was awarded the Nobel prize in Physics 2001.
#9. Africa From Spain
You can see Africa from Spain!
Now, I can imagine some of the things you are pondering inside your head.
“This guy doesn’t have a clue about what he is talking about.”
“Go back to sixth grade and pay attention in class.”
If you are a geography buff like me, I think you know exactly what I am talking about.
Meet
Gibraltar. This is an overseas British territory located on the
southern tip of Spain. For you to enter here from Spain, you need a
passport as this is Britain’s land. Here, you can see Morocco across the
Strait of Gibraltar.
Near Gibraltar is a place called Bolonia in the Tarifa province of Spain. There you can also see Morocco.
Pretty neat, right?
#8. Meatless Meat
Have you ever tasted plant-based beef or plant-based bacon?
If that wasn't crazy enough then what about this: One in every five sausage rolls sold in the Netherlands are not made of meat.
But the fact is, no matter how ludicrous it sounds, plant-based meat has become a reality in 2017.
The Vegetarian Butcher, since
opening it's first shop in The Hague in 2010 has been focused on making
plant-based products that look, smell & taste like meat.
Mr.
Korteweg, the founder of the company aims to seduce meat lovers without
inflicting harm on animals and livestocks.
Other firms associated with plant-based meat are Tofurky, Gardein, Yves Veggie Cuisine etc.
Though
it has faced some obstacles & difficulties in countries like
Germany & The Netherlands but it's a great innovation nonetheless.
So
if you are a vegan & always wanted to know how meat tastes like
maybe now is your time have a beef burger without feeling bad for it.
#7. Paper Reaches Moon
Keep Folding Paper (in half) to Reach the Moon!
Folding a standard piece of paper with a thickness of 0.01cm in half will give you a piece 0.02cm thick.
Doing it again will make it 0.04cm thick, and so on.
Thanks
to the power of exponents, if you wanted to keep folding so that the
paper reached the moon, you would only have to do it 42 times before it
would have a thickness of 439,804.651 km.
However, despite your best efforts it’s nearly impossible :(
#6. Loss-of -oxygen’ mask conundrum
Always apply your own mask before assisting others”.
Sounds wrong, even selfish and self serving, but is so right on many levels in life’s circumstances.
No
matter your intentions, helping others be OK can be dangerous if you,
yourself are not OK.
There are a lot of people out there so willing to
jump in and help you out, yet, many of them do it with expectations. I
call these people ‘dangerous helpers’.
They will eventually take from
you, take advantage of you, and try to guilt you into believing they
deserve it because they “helped” you. Ultimately, they helped for
recognition and/or reward because of their insecurities and inability to
fix their own lives.
They did not assist themselves before assisting others. Just like the oxygen mask scenario.
#5. The Birthday Paradox
How many minimum number of people are required to gather in a same room to have more than 50% chances that at least two people will share the same birthday?
What do you think?
366?
183?
The answer is actually 23.
You need only 23 people in a room to get a probability of more than 1/2 that 2 people will have same birth day.
The more interesting fact, with only 100 people in the room, you will get 99.99997% chances that two person have the exact same birthday.
This is called the birthday paradox.
The actual probability varies like this:
#4. Unbelievable?
When you stretch a rubber band, what happens to its thickness?
You
must be thinking that it becomes thinner. That’s what happens when you
stretch anything.
And you not wrong, but what if I tell you that NOT ALL materials become thinner when stretched.
There are certain materials which when stretched, becomes thicker instead of becoming thinner.
Wait, what… what did I just say? Yes, and these materials are found in nature as well as made in the labs. These materials are called Auxetics.
These types of materials can be used in bulletproof jackets etc. or any kind of shockproof technology.
#3. English is Funny
Police police police police.
No, it's not someone calling out for police. It's actually a properly framed English sentence obeying all the grammatical rules.
How?
People
are policed by the police. This can also be expressed as - Police
police the people. Because in this context, police happens to be both a
verb and a noun.
Now if one asks - Who polices the police?
The answer would be - Police police police police.
Here's one more,
That that exists exists in that that that that exists exists in.
This seemingly absurd jumble of words, holds a proper meaning.
It basically means - An object exists in whatever it exists in.
It's kind of analogous to - I live where I live in.
Sometimes certain sentences sound extremely wrong, but all the while, they are grammatically correct. And these are just two examples.
So, English is a funny language indeed.
For those who don't get it find it funny.
#2. Math
If a disease infects 2% of a population, and a test is developed that is 95% accurate (and no false negatives), then if you are tested positive, the chance you actually have the disease is only 29%.
Population = 1000.
People who have disease X = 20.
People who don't have disease X = 980.
False positive rate = 5%.
False negative rate = 0%.
People who have disease X = 20.
People who don't have disease X = 980.
False positive rate = 5%.
False negative rate = 0%.
Of the 20 people who have disease X, they all receive a correct positive reading.
Of the 980 have don't have disease X, 49 of them will receive an incorrect/false positive reading.
69
people tested positive, yet only 20 of them are actually positive.
That's a 29% chance that if you tested positive, you're actually
positive, for a test that is 95% accurate.
Now let's say you have a 99% accurate test, for a disease that infects 1 in a million people.
Population = 1,000,000.
People who have disease X = 1.
People who don't have disease X = 999,999.
False positive rate = 1%.
False negative rate = 0%.
People who have disease X = 1.
People who don't have disease X = 999,999.
False positive rate = 1%.
False negative rate = 0%.
1% of the 999,999 people who don't have disease X will receive a false positive. That's 10 thousand people (rounded).
10,001 people tested positive, and 10,000 of those are false positives.
So there's a 99.99% chance you don't have it, if tested positive on that 99% accurate test.
#1. Food Saver
One 18″ pizza is more pizza than two 12″ pizzas.
Doubtful eh? Let's clear this by comparing two 12″ pizzas and a 18″ pizza.
We all know that the formula for area of the circle is πr². where r is the radius of the circle and the value of π is 3.14
Area of two 12″ pizzas
diameter=12, therefore radius(r)= 6.
r²= 6*6=36.
Area= 2*36π = 72π = 72*3.14= 226.08 in²
Area of one 18″ pizza
diameter=18, therefore radius(r)= 9.
r²= 9*9= 81.
Area = πr² = 81π =81*3.14= 254.34 in²
So if you buy pizza based on price per sq.inch, the large is always a better deal.
Next time you order pizzas choose wisely :p
