Engineering has always been on go, don't get me wrong, I'm not referring to parents forcing their children to choose engineering. I'm referencing the advancement of engineering and technology.
The rapid growth of science and technology which is affecting every sphere of our lives, has brought several things to cherish for. Seeing amazing feats of engineering and science everywhere is not new, but even then there are many marvels, you may still not know about.
So here we are counting upon our list of Top 10 Greatest Engineering Marvels You Never Knew, now you'd probably buckle up, as we're diving straight to the list.
#10. The Beijing National Stadium
World’s largest steel structure, Beijing National Stadium also known as the Bird’s Nest is a stadium in Beijing, China.
This astonishing structure looks more like a public work of art than an Olympic stadium. Designed by the Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron for use throughout the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
This recent engineering wonder is one of the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly stadiums in the world.
During the winter, underground geothermal pipes heat the indoor part of the stadium. Underground cisterns collect and store rainwater for irrigation and for use in restrooms.
#9. The Laerdal Tunnel
To connect the Norwegian cities of Laerdal and Aurland highway engineers were forced to solve a small problem: the Hornsnipa and Jeronnosi mountains.
Instead of going around the obstacles, they decided to go through them. The result was the Laerdal Tunnel, which runs through solid gneiss rock for 15 miles (24 kilometers), earning it the title of the world's longest completed road tunnel.
Excavating such a structure is only one of the challenges. Designers also have to ensure that motorists can make the long, underground trek without succumbing to "highway hypnosis."
To address this problem, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration called in a team of psychologists to make sure the finished roadway was as stimulating as possible.
The agency recommended including blue lights and gentle curves to keep drivers engaged. They also suggested that the final tunnel be divided into four sections to help reduce monotony.
#8. The Large Hadron Collider
The world’s largest and highest particle-energy accelerator has helped change modern physics. The accelerator is located underground in a 574-foot long tunnel with a circumference of 17 miles.
The project was developed by CERN and completed in 2008. The main purpose of building the LHC was to answer many basic questions of science and the universe as well as develop technologies such as medical imaging and electronics among many other.
#7. Millay Viaduct
The world’s tallest cable-stayed road bridge has towers that are almost as tall as the Empire State Building and are 1,125 feet tall.
The project was completed in December 2004 and was started to reduce the congested traffic between Paris and Barcelona during the summer vacation months.
The Millau Viaduct was completed in an astonishing time of 3 years. But the most amazing part is the technique used to create the bridge due to its height of 900 feet.
The roads were built on both side of the towers and then rolled out to the middle instead of the bridge being installed in sections.
#6. Three Gorges Dam
Taking shape of the largest hydroelectric power plant in the world and that too by a long shot, the Three Gorges Dam in China is not just spectacular to watch but enormous in magnitude.
Generating 22.5 GW of power it will supply energy amounting to 4% of China’s national needs. Creating a reservoir as large as Lake Superior, this dam will be good as a grand marvel of modern engineering by becoming the world’s largest concrete structure!
#5. The Bailong Elevator
The
Bailong Elevator is both the heaviest and highest elevator in the
world. It rises to over 1,000 feet high, and reaches that in minutes.
A
maximum of 50 people can enjoy this ride at a time, allowing 18,00
people to use it daily. They built the elevator out of glass, riders can
enjoy the view on their way up the cliff.
Some call the Hundred Dragons
Elevator, because everything in China has to have a cool name.
#4. Palm Islands
Tourists can find the largest artificial islands the world knows in Dubai. There are three islands, Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali, and Deira Island.
The islands are home to hundreds of villas, and lots of leisure facilities. The islands are designed to attract tourism to the city of Dubai. There are 1500 villas on the islands.
#3. New Hong Kong International Airport
That large stretch of flat land in the middle of the water was originally two separate, mountainous islands. To build it, they demolished the mountains and used the rocks to infill the space between the islands to create a large piece of flat ground upon which to build the airport.
Think about that for a little bit.
We blew up two mountains and moved them into the sea!
#2. Coronary Nanobot
South Korean scientists at Chonnam National University have developed a microsurgery robot to help battle coronary artery disease.
Measuring 1mm wide by 5mm, the nanobot is injected into the body. Once there it can be guided manually or automatically to a specific part of the body.
The nanobot is propelled by a sophisticated joystick controlled electro-magnetic field and is equipped with a signal transmitter/receiver, a drill that's capable of 1800 RPM and a drug injector.
It's only been trialed on pigs, but other clinical tests should soon begin with a possible introduction into hospitals by 2020.
#1. International Space Station
The International Space Station is the largest artificial satellite orbiting the Earth 220 miles away. The objective was to learn more about the possibility of living and working in space.
It’s so large that sometimes it can actually be spotted by eye on Earth. The ISS consists of pressurized modules, external trusses, solar arrays, and other components.
American and Russian aerospace engineers built the initial two shuttles, these combined to form the the foundations of the ISS.
It has the space to home six astronauts. It has five bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a gymnasium. It didn’t come cheap, and costed around $150 billion.
